README FILE FOR
DEMONSTRATION VERSION OF
HAM LOG
(v. 3.10 - Compressed LHA format)
This file contains important information for installing Ham Log.
Please read this file BEFORE running Ham Log. To print it, type from
the DOS prompt:
COPY HAMREAD.ME PRN <enter>
INSTALLATION of VERSION 3 . . .
Ham Log requires a hard disk and the computer must have at least
640k of RAM. It comes in a self-expanding compressed format .exe
file, and will require approximately 1 meg of disk space.
There is just one requirement in your computer's configuration (most
computers would have this anyway) - the CONFIG.SYS file must contain
the line:
FILES=35 (or a higher number)
A simple batch file has been included that will automatically
install Ham Log onto your hard disk drive C:, into the directory
\HAMLOG. To use this feature, insert your Ham Log floppy disk,
change to its drive and type at DOS: INSTALL . This facility will
also add a batch file called HL.BAT into the root directory of drive
C:. You then need only type HL to run Ham Log.
You may wish to install Ham Log into another drive or sub-directory.
If so, simply copy the files from your floppy disk into it, and
execute the file: HL3DEMO.EXE . This will produce / expand all the
necessary files. (You can then delete this file.) Then, to run Ham
Log, type: HAMLOG.
The installation will create a file called CHANGES.TXT. that details
some of the changes made to Ham Log. Well worth a glance.
INSTRUCTIONS...
Ham Log is fully menu driven, and an abundance of help is available
throughout the program by pressing F1. The help is extremely
informative.
However, take the time to read the instructions in the file called
HMMANUAL.TXT, so you don't miss out on some of Ham Log's features.
It is a normal ASCII text file. You can load it into any word
processor and print it with page formatting. Otherwise, to print the
file type from the DOS prompt (from the disk / directory containing
the file):
COPY HMMANUAL.TXT PRN <enter>
Should you have tried an earlier version of Ham Log, the Country and
Log files are NOT compatible. (Upgrades include a simple conversion
procedure.)
Remember, Ham Log requires a minimum of 512 k of FREE RAM to
operate. If you try and run it from within another program (such as
Xtree) then there is likely to be insufficient free RAM (as Xtree
can remain in memory). The program may start up OK, but fail mid-
stream.
GENERAL . . .
There are certain restrictions to the demonstration version. None
will affect your ability to fully assess the program. The countries
and prefix databases are not current, and beam headings are not
supplied.
A demonstration log (no. 6) with nearly 300 QSOs is included. This
enables you to try out many of the features for which Ham Log has
become famous, without having to enter the QSOs yourself.
I am certain you will appreciate the results of years of hard labour
in programming and research to produce the definitive IBM computer
program for Amateur Radio Operators. With many sophisticated
facilities, Ham Log remains very easy to use.
Many of Ham Log's enhanced features are partly due to user feedback.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
You are welcome to make copies of this demonstration version of the
program and freely distribute it. The only files needed are those
that came on your demonstration disk, i.e. you do not need to copy
any of the files on your hard disk.
No doubt you will wish to order your full copy of Ham Log very soon.
There is an order form enclosed - simply print the file HMORDER.TXT.
You are most welcome to contact me if you have any queries about Ham
Log. You may contact me directly during business hours (23:00z -
07:00z) on Sydney 369 2008, or fax on 369 3069. If dialling from
overseas, Australia's country code is 61, then add 2 as the area
code, followed by the telephone number.
